Where Is Cannes, and Where Does It Sit on the Riviera?

Ask most people where Cannes is and they’ll point at a red carpet. That answer covers a couple of weeks a year. For the rest of it, Cannes is a different city altogether. Where it sits on the map quietly shapes almost every decision you make about a trip here. This is how we’d read that map.

Where Is Cannes, France?

Cannes is on the French Riviera in southeastern France, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. It sits on the curve of the Gulf of La Napoule, about 30 km (19 miles) southwest of Nice. Antibes lies just to the east, and the red peaks of the Esterel rise to the west.

That position explains how the town became a resort at all. In 1834, quarantine rules stopped Lord Brougham from entering Nice. He settled instead on what was then a fishing village, built a villa there and returned every winter for 34 years.

How to Get to Cannes From Nice Airport and Beyond

Most visitors fly into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, roughly 25 km (15 miles) away. The drive takes 30 to 45 minutes, longer in summer traffic.

The train is cheaper and often faster. A free tram runs from the terminals to Nice Saint-Augustin station, and regional trains reach Cannes in around 30 minutes. Cannes station sits in the town center, and high-speed TGV services stop there too.

Flying private changes the picture. Cannes-Mandelieu Airport is about 5 km (3 miles) west of the city and handles business and general aviation only, with no scheduled airline flights.

Our advice for families or groups is simple. Use the train for day trips, and book a driver for arrival day. Nobody enjoys a tram transfer with six suitcases.

Where Is the Cannes Festival Held?

The Festival de Cannes is held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, at the start of the Croisette beside the Old Port. Its red carpet climbs 24 steps into the Grand Théâtre Lumière, where the competition films premiere. The 80th edition runs from May 11 to 22, 2027.

What surprises first-timers is that the festival isn’t really open to the public. Screenings inside the Palais are reserved for accredited professionals and invited guests.

You can still get close. Crowds gather along the Croisette barriers to watch the evening arrivals. Every night at 9:30 p.m., the Cinéma de la Plage screens films for free on Plage Macé, a few steps from the Palais. Seats go to whoever arrives first. Our Festival de Cannes 2026 guide covers how to attend in more depth.

Our luxury concierge service is here to craft your perfect experience and handle every detail seamlessly. From securing unparalleled access to exclusive locales to arranging flawless private services and curated experiences, consider it done.

Where to Go in Cannes, From Le Suquet to La Californie

Cannes is compact, but its neighborhoods have very different personalities.

Le Suquet is the old town, climbing the hill above the Old Port. At the top, the Musée des Explorations du Monde occupies the old castle, and the view back across the bay is worth the walk alone. The Forville market, the city’s main produce market, opens Tuesday to Sunday mornings, and daily in July and August.

The Croisette is the seafront boulevard running east from the Palais, lined with palace hotels and private beaches. Walk it once, early, before the heat and the crowds arrive.

La Californie is the neighborhood we would choose to stay in. This leafy hillside at the eastern end of town grew up around grand villas in the late 19th century. Picasso later lived and painted in one of them. It is quiet and residential, yet a short drive from the Croisette.

The Lérins Islands make the best half-day in Cannes, about 15 minutes by boat from the port. Sainte-Marguerite holds the Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned for 11 years. Saint-Honorat is home to Cistercian monks who still make wine. Each island has its own ferry service, so pick one per trip rather than trying to do both.

The Best Time to Visit Cannes Depends on Its Event Calendar

Weather is the easy part. Cannes shares the mild Mediterranean climate of the whole coast, and our guide to the best time to visit the French Riviera covers the seasons.

The real variable is the Palais. It hosts major trade events as well as the film festival, and when one is on, the city fills and prices follow. The big dates for 2027 look like this.

MIPIM, the real estate market, runs March 16 to 19.

The Festival de Cannes runs May 11 to 22.

Cannes Lions, the advertising festival, runs June 21 to 25.

MIPCOM, the television market, returns each October.

If you have no business at any of them, plan around them. If you do, book as early as you can. Outside those weeks, early summer and September are when we would go.

Where to Stay in Cannes, and Why We'd Choose a Villa

For a weekend, a hotel on the Croisette puts everything on your doorstep, and that’s hard to beat. Villas usually need a minimum stay of five to seven nights. For a week, though, or for any stay around a major event, a private house gives you space the seafront can’t.

In La Californie, Villa Saintpaulia sleeps up to 12 in five bedrooms, with a heated pool and pool house, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the Croisette. Around 7 km (4 miles) inland in Mougins, Villa Mila is a contemporary SAOTA-designed house. It has a heated infinity pool and its own spa area with sauna and hammam.

Tell us your dates and what brings you to Cannes, and the Bucket List Villa reservation team will match you with the right house. Mention any event you’re attending, and we’ll plan around it.
